Where to Build a Website for Free and How to Choose Good Web Hosting

WEBSITE HOSTING

Wix

Wix is another easy option if you've never built a website. You can create and publish a functioning website using a free Wix account. Upgrading adds features such as connecting your own domain and removing Wix ads.

Good for: Beginners who prefer a visual website builder.

This one is particularly interesting if you want to experiment with traditional web hosting. InfinityFree currently advertises free hosting with 5 GB of disk space, PHP, MySQL/MariaDB, SSL, free subdomains and support for your own domain. It also says it doesn't place advertisements on hosted websites and doesn't require a credit card. It can also run WordPress through its installer.

Good for: Learning WordPress, PHP, MySQL and traditional hosting without immediately paying for a hosting account.

For a serious affiliate business, I'd still consider moving to stronger paid hosting as the site grows.

GitHub Pages

If you're comfortable working with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, GitHub Pages is another free option. GitHub describes Pages as static-site hosting that publishes HTML, CSS and JavaScript from a repository. It is available with GitHub Free for public repositories and supports custom domains. GitHub Docs

Good for: Simple websites, landing pages, portfolios and people who want to learn web development.

Not my first choice for: Someone wanting an easy traditional WordPress affiliate blog.

When Is It Worth Paying for Hosting?

Free hosting is great for experimenting, learning and launching your first project. But if you're serious about building an affiliate website that you hope will grow for years, paid hosting can eventually make sense.

Look for a host that provides:

  • WordPress support

  • Free SSL/HTTPS

  • Reliable backups

  • Good performance

  • Security features

  • Easy WordPress installation

  • Enough storage and bandwidth

  • Responsive customer support

  • Clear renewal pricing

  • An easy migration process

Don't choose a host simply because an advertisement says “$1.99 per month.” Check how long you must prepay to receive that price and, most importantly, what the hosting renews for afterward.

Paid Hosting Companies to Research

What Would I Recommend for a Beginner?

If you've never created a website before, there's nothing wrong with starting free. Use a free platform to learn how to create pages, publish articles, add images, understand SEO and figure out what kind of website you actually want. Once you're serious about building an affiliate business, consider purchasing your own domain and using WordPress on hosting that gives you greater control.

Your own domain also makes your brand much easier to remember:

YourSite.com

instead of something like:

YourSite.SomeFreeService.com

What About Affiliate Marketing?

Once your website is running, you can begin creating useful content around a particular subject. For example, instead of filling a new website with affiliate banners, create articles that actually answer questions people are searching for. If your website is about camping, you might publish:

Best Camping Gear for Beginners
What Do I Need for My First Camping Trip?
Tent A vs. Tent B: What's the Difference?
10 Things I Wish I Had Taken Camping

You can then apply to relevant affiliate programs and potentially earn a commission when someone makes a qualifying purchase through your links. The same approach works with technology, hobbies, software, home products, online services and thousands of other niches. Just remember: joining an affiliate program doesn't guarantee you'll make money. You still need useful content and people who want to read it.

The Bottom Line is:

You don't need an expensive website to begin learning. Start simple. Learn how websites work. Publish useful information. Build an audience. Then spend money on better hosting when you have a reason to. For someone with $0 to spend, I'd investigate WordPress.com, Wix or InfinityFree first. For someone who already owns a domain and wants to build a serious WordPress affiliate site, I'd compare paid WordPress hosting instead of choosing solely on the lowest advertised introductory price.

If you're thinking about starting a blog, affiliate marketing website, product-review site, or just want your own place on the internet, you don't necessarily need to spend a lot of money to get started. There are several platforms that let you build and publish a website for free. The tradeoff is that free hosting usually comes with limitations, such as a subdomain, fewer customization options, limited storage, platform branding, or restrictions on advanced features. That's not necessarily a bad thing when you're learning. A good approach is simple: start with what you can afford, learn how everything works, create useful content, and upgrade only when your website actually needs more.

Can You Really Build a Website for Free?

Yes.

Several established services allow you to create a real website without paying for hosting. For example, WordPress currently provides a free hosted website with SSL, themes, the WordPress block editor and unlimited posts. The free version uses a wordpress subdomain rather than your own .com as the primary address.

Wix also lets you sign up and build a functioning website for free. You'll need a paid plan for features such as connecting your own domain and removing Wix branding. Wix Support The important thing is understanding the difference between starting free and having every feature free forever.

Hostinger

Free Website & Hosting Options Worth Exploring

WordPress.com

This is probably where I'd point many beginners who simply want to start writing. You don't need to purchase separate hosting. The free plan includes hosting, SSL, themes and the WordPress editor. You can create pages and publish as many posts as you want. It's particularly suitable for learning how blogging and WordPress work before investing in a larger website.

Good for: Blogs, beginners, articles and learning WordPress.

Keep in mind: A free site uses a yourdomain.com address. Using your own domain as the site's primary address requires a paid plan.

DreamHost

DreamHost offers both traditional web hosting and WordPress-specific hosting. Its WordPress installer can automatically set up a new WordPress installation, and its hosting supports custom sites as well. DreamHost currently advertises introductory WordPress hosting pricing, but —as with any host—look at the renewal price and included features rather than choosing based solely on the introductory rate. InfinityFree — Free Website Hosting

InfinityFree is a completely free web-hosting service that's a good option for beginners, hobby projects, testing, or anyone who wants to build a website without paying for hosting. It currently includes 5 GB storage, PHP 8.4, MySQL/MariaDB, free SSL, free subdomains, and support for your own domain, with no forced ads or credit card required. You can also install WordPress using Softaculous. InfinityFree

Good for: WordPress beginners, blogs, personal websites, learning web development, and testing new website ideas.

Our take: One of the more interesting options for getting a real PHP/MySQL website online without paying for hosting. Just remember that free hosting has resource limitations and does not include one-on-one technical support, so a growing or business-critical website may eventually be better suited to paid hosting.
