Are Paid Surveys Really Worth Your Time?

Paid survey sites can be a simple way to earn a little extra money online, especially when you have some spare time. They're not something I would look at as a replacement for a regular income, but they can be an easy way to earn some extra cash or gift cards. The important thing is knowing what you're getting into.

Don't Look at the Survey Reward Alone

A survey might advertise a certain payment for 10 or 20 minutes of your time, but that doesn't always tell the whole story. You may have to answer several screening questions before finding out whether you qualify. Sometimes you'll qualify and complete the survey; other times you may be screened out because the researchers are looking for a particular demographic. That's why I think it's better to consider all the time you're spending on a survey site, not just the time spent on surveys you successfully complete.

Understand Points Before You Start

Some survey and reward sites pay in points rather than dollars. There's nothing necessarily wrong with that, but make sure you understand what those points are actually worth.

Look at:

  • How many points equal $1?

  • What's the minimum amount required to cash out?

  • Can you redeem for cash, or only gift cards?

  • Are PayPal or bank-transfer options available?

  • How long does it normally take to receive a reward?

Cash-out rules can differ considerably. For example, InboxDollars' current terms state a $30 minimum payment amount, while Swagbucks currently lists some rewards beginning at $5.

Keep Your Expectations Realistic

I look at surveys as a way to potentially make a little extra money during spare time, not as a full-time job. How much you can earn will depend on things such as your demographics, the surveys available to you, how often you qualify, the amount each survey pays, and how much time you spend on the site. Some days you may find several opportunities. Other days there may be very little worth completing.

My approach is simple: if something claims to be a way to earn money, we want to look beyond the headline and find out what it really takes.

Free Paid-Survey Sites to Check Out

Here are some established platforms that are currently free to join. Availability and eligibility can vary by country and individual.

The Bottom Line is:

Paid surveys can be worth trying when they're free to join and you understand the rules, but keep your expectations reasonable. Think of them as one possible way to earn a little extra during your spare time rather than a guaranteed source of income.

Before joining, check the current payout threshold, payment methods, eligibility requirements, privacy policy and terms. And never pay an upfront fee just for the privilege of taking ordinary consumer surveys.

Survey Junkie — Offers paid surveys and focus groups. You earn points for successfully completing eligible surveys, with redemption options including PayPal and e-gift cards. Learn More

Swagbucks — Free to join and broader than a traditional survey site. Members can earn SB through surveys and other activities and redeem them for rewards. Some gift-card rewards currently start at $5. Learn More

InboxDollars — Free to join and offers surveys along with other earning activities. One thing I'd point out prominently in an E4R2 review is that its current terms specify a $30 minimum payment amount. It is currently limited to U.S. residents age 18 or older. Learn More

Pinecone Research — Free to join and offers surveys, product-testing opportunities and other research activities. Its site currently says rewards can be redeemed once you reach $10. Learn More

Toluna Influencers
Toluna is a free-to-join survey and rewards community where members earn points by completing online surveys and participating in certain other activities. Points can be redeemed for available rewards, which may include PayPal cash and gift cards, depending on your country. Toluna

Good for: People looking to earn a little extra money or rewards in their spare time by sharing their opinions.

Our take: Toluna is worth considering if you enjoy paid surveys and want something that's free to join. Just keep in mind that you won't qualify for every survey, and rewards and opportunities can vary. It's best viewed as a way to earn some extra spending money, not a regular income. Learn More

The biggest problem is the claim that survey sites “often” work out to $2–$4 per hour. That could happen, but it isn't a dependable industry-wide figure without your own testing or a source supporting it. Likewise, saying reward sites “frequently obscure” cash values sounds more accusatory than necessary. Different platforms simply use different points/reward systems.

You're right that screen-outs/disqualifications matter, cash-out thresholds matter, and users should consider the total time spent rather than just the advertised reward for a completed survey. For example, Survey Junkie says rewards generally require successfully completing a survey, while Pinecone explicitly notes that some surveys use screening questions to determine qualification. YouGov — Members earn points from surveys and certain other data-sharing activities. YouGov says survey point amounts vary based on length and complexity and can eventually be converted into rewards. Learn More
